Let me say this upfront, because it matters:
👉 I did not quit my teaching job on a whim.
👉 I did not wake up one day and magically replace my income.
👉 And I definitely didn’t do it overnight.

What I did do was slowly, intentionally, and somewhat chaotically build multiple side income streams until one day I realized they added up to (and eventually surpassed) my full-time teaching salary. I started when my kids were very young. I have almost always been a work at home mom not a stay at home mom. I’ve only had one period in my life when I didn’t work and that was when I was pregnant with my son and told to stay off my feet for the entire pregnancy. That was a hard 9 months with no income. But what that taught me was to have multiple income streams so if one dips out another can take over.
And in today’s truly awful job market? That matters more than ever.
Why I Started Side Hustling in the First Place
Teaching was meaningful, but it was also exhausting. I loved my students — I didn’t love living paycheck to paycheck, having zero flexibility, and feeling stuck financially.
So I did what a lot of people do:
I started something on the side.
Not to “escape” immediately.
Not to become rich overnight.
Just to breathe a little easier.
That one small step turned into many.
The Side Hustles That Replaced My Income

📝 Blogging
Blogging was one of my first side hustles, and honestly, one of the slowest to pay off at the beginning. It took time to learn SEO, create content, and figure out what actually made money. I have been blogging since 2002. To think I’m still making money from blogging blows my mind. But I never gave up. I, also, learned you have to be flexible and pivot (and pivot often). Blogging changes and the way people find you changes. You have to change with it or you won’t continue to be successful.
But over time, blogging turned into income through:
- Ads
- Affiliate marketing
- Sponsored content
- Digital products
It wasn’t glamorous at first — it was consistent. It still is…to this day.
🏡 Property Management
Property management became another steady income stream. This was less about creativity and more about reliability.
My first two purchases for rental income have been hard. But they are worth it. We are working it and it will be our retirement income so we don’t have to rely on social security. It’s important that what you do can make money for you now and in the future. Rental income is going nowhere. People will always need homes.

It also taught me something important:
Not every side hustle needs to be exciting — some just need to be predictable.
I do property management for other people too. This is where one income stream can ebb and flow in to many more.
That stability helped me feel confident adding more income streams instead of relying on just one.
💡 Many Other Income Streams
I didn’t stop at two.
Over time, I added:
- Digital products
- Printables
- Freelance-style work (social media manager, writer, editor, video editor, copy-editor etc)
- Small passive income ideas that added up

None of them replaced my income alone.
Together, they did.
I make about $1000/month from each of my income streams. This shows you where multiple income streams can pay off is when they work together to help you build wealth, too.
That’s the secret most people skip.
The Truth About Replacing Your Income
Here’s the part people don’t love hearing — but need to:
👉 Do not quit your full-time job until your side hustles replace your income.
Especially right now. You also need to know how to pivot and be flexible because change is the only thing that is continuous.
This job market is unpredictable, layoffs are happening everywhere, and “just follow your passion” doesn’t pay the electric bill.
Working your full-time job while building side income:
- Gives you financial safety
- Reduces stress
- Lets you make smarter decisions
- Prevents desperation-driven choices
Yes, it’s tiring.
Yes, it’s a lot.
But it’s temporary.
How You Can Do This Too (Even Now)
You don’t need:
- A massive social media following
- A viral moment
- A business degree
- Or 40 extra hours a week
You do need:
✔ Consistency and flexibility
✔ Patience
✔ Willingness to learn and consistency to keep learning
✔ Multiple income streams
✔ Realistic expectations
Start small.
Stack income.
Reinvest.
Repeat.
Why Multiple Streams Matter More Than Ever
Relying on one paycheck in this economy is risky.
Relying on one side hustle is risky too.
Multiple streams mean:
- If one slows down, another carries you
- You’re less vulnerable to layoffs
- You have options
- You gain confidence
That confidence changes everything. The ability to not worry about a layoff in this economy is everything to me. My jobs are just carrying me through. The best part is that I work on average, 4 hours per day. Who doesn’t want a part time job with full time income?
Final Thoughts
Replacing my teaching income wasn’t about escaping work. I taught for 7 years full time. I have done my income streams for about 18 years. I’ll take my income streams over full time teaching any day of the week.
It was always about creating options.
And if you’re reading this feeling stuck, tired, or worried about the future — know this:
You don’t have to blow up your life to change it.
Build quietly.
Work your job.
Stack your income.
Protect your peace.
