How to make DIY Teacup Candles with Coconut & Paraffin Wax

If you’ve got vintage teacups collecting dust (or snagged a few from the thrift store), it’s time to turn them into something magical. These melt-and-pour coconut and paraffin wax candles are budget-friendly, beginner-friendly, and totally giftable. Plus, they look way fancier than they cost.

🧂 Supplies You’ll Need

  • Coconut and paraffin wax blend (for a clean, slow burn)
  • Teacups (ceramic or porcelain, heat-safe)
  • Wicks (pre-tabbed cotton or wood)
  • Fragrance oil or essential oil (optional but delightful)
  • Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl
  • Wick stickers or hot glue (I used clothespins)
  • Chopsticks or wick holders
  • Thermometer (optional but helpful)

🧠 Why the blend? Coconut wax burns clean and slow, while paraffin gives you that classic candle finish and scent throw. Together, they’re a dream team.

🔥 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep your teacups Clean and dry them thoroughly. Use wick stickers (mine came with this) or a dab of hot glue to secure the wick to the bottom center of each cup.
  2. Melt the wax Use a 70/30 blend of paraffin to coconut wax. Melt in a double boiler or microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between rounds. Aim for about 170°F.
  1. Add fragrance Once melted, remove from heat and stir in fragrance oil (about 1 oz per pound of wax). Let it cool slightly to around 150°F before pouring. If you wait until the wax begins to turn white you have waited too long. I ended up choosing not to add scents because I have dogs and couldn’t figure out which one to use that didn’t hurt my dogs (and I’m very proactive and protective on this!)
  2. Pour into teacups Carefully pour the wax into each cup, holding the wick upright with chopsticks or a wick holder. Leave about ½ inch from the rim.
  3. Let it set Allow candles to cool and harden for 4–6 hours. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch.
  4. Decorate or gift Tie a ribbon around the handle, add a tag, or wrap in cellophane for gifting. Or just light it and bask in your crafty brilliance.

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Use white paraffin for a clean look or dyed wax for a pop of color.
  • Add dried herbs or flower petals on top before the wax sets for a rustic vibe.
  • If the wax sinks near the wick as it cools, do a second pour to smooth it out.

🎁 Why You’ll Love This

These candles are:

  • Eco-ish (thanks to coconut wax)
  • Customizable (hello, signature scents!)
  • Adorable (teacups = instant charm)
  • Sellable or giftable (perfect for holiday markets or teacher gifts)

I love how sweet these are and so easy to make and give as gifts. My daughter and I did these together and I may not be buying candles ever again. This was so fast, easy, and inexpensive!
