How to redo a cheap facebook marketplace dining table and chairs from cheap to fancy

From “Facebook Freebie” to Fancy: How to Redo a Cheap Dining Table and Chairs Without Losing Your Mind

So you snagged a dining set off Facebook Marketplace (like I did) for the price of a drive-thru combo meal ($25 for me!). Congrats! You’re now the proud owner of something that’s 40% wood, 60% questionable varnish, and 100% potential. If it’s giving “college apartment chic” and you’re dreaming of “Pinterest-worthy farmhouse glam,” I’ve got you covered.

I’ve redone more furniture than I care to admit, and this process is tried, tested, and totally doable—even if you’ve never held a sander in your life. Let’s turn that budget find into a showpiece you’ll actually want to eat dinner on.

🛠️ Step 1: Assess the Damage (and Your Sanity)

Before you dive in, take a good look at what you’ve got. Is it solid wood or laminate? Are the chairs sturdy or one sneeze away from collapse? You don’t need perfection—you just need potential. If it’s got good bones, we can work with it. If it smells like a wet basement and wobbles like a toddler, maybe keep scrolling. Here’s mine and, yes, I bought it off facebook marketplace!

🧽 Step 2: Clean It Like You Mean It

Grab some warm water, dish soap, and a scrubby sponge. Wipe down every surface like you’re trying to erase its past life. You’d be amazed what a little elbow grease can do. If it’s sticky, grimy, or smells like regret, add a splash of vinegar to the mix.

🪵 Step 3: Sand It Down (Yes, You Have to)

This is where the magic starts. Sanding removes old finish, smooths out scratches, and gives your paint something to cling to. You don’t need a fancy electric sander—though if you have one, bless your efficient heart.

  • Use 80–120 grit sandpaper to start.
  • Sand with the grain (not against it, unless you enjoy chaos).
  • Wipe off dust with a damp cloth when you’re done.

Pro tip: If the chairs have spindles or curves, grab a sanding sponge or flexible sanding pad. Your hands will thank you.

🎨 Step 4: Prime Time

If you’re painting it white (classic, clean, and totally forgiving), primer is your best friend. It helps block stains and gives you a smooth base.

  • Use a stain-blocking primer like Zinsser or Kilz. I tend to use Kilz.
  • Apply with a brush for corners and a foam roller for flat surfaces.
  • Let it dry completely before moving on. No shortcuts—we’re fancy now.

Working on my table’s glow up as we speak!

🖌️ Step 5: Paint It White (Or Whatever Makes You Happy)

Now for the fun part. Choose a durable furniture paint—chalk paint, enamel, or acrylic latex all work. I like a satin or semi-gloss finish because it’s wipeable and doesn’t scream “I tried.”

  • Apply 2–3 thin coats, letting each one dry fully.
  • Lightly sand between coats with 220 grit for a smooth finish.
  • Seal with a clear topcoat if you want extra durability (especially for kids, pets, or clumsy adults). Do not skip this step!

🪑 Step 6: Upgrade the Chairs

If the seats are upholstered, rip that fabric off like you’re starting a new life. Replace it with something fresh—faux leather, patterned canvas, or even drop cloth for that farmhouse vibe.

  • Cut new fabric with 2–3 inches extra around the edges.
  • Use a staple gun to attach it underneath.
  • Pull tight, staple evenly, and pretend you’re on HGTV.

If the seats are wood, sand and paint them to match—or go bold with a contrasting color. You’re the boss. Or be like Friends and love the mismatched style! I bought two different sets of chairs on facebook market place. I think I paid $20 for 2 and $10 for two! So, total in my table is now up to $55 (not counting paint). That beats a $899 table anyday of the week! We absolutely love it too!

Here’s a fun printable so you know what steps you have to do to take your kitchen table from freebie to fancy and fabulous! Just right click and hit print!

✨ Step 7: Style It Like You Mean It

Now that your table is officially fancy, give it the spotlight it deserves.

  • Add a runner, a vase, or a bowl of fake lemons (because why not).
  • Hang a cute sign above it that says “Gather” or “Eat” or “Don’t Fight at Dinner.”
  • Snap a pic and tag me @myunentitledlife so I can cheer you on.

Why You Can Trust This Process

  • Experience: I’ve flipped furniture, DIY’d my way through chaos, and lived to blog about it.
  • Expertise: I know what works for real families with real budgets and real messes.
  • Authoritativeness: My blog is built on practical, tested advice that’s been shared, pinned, and loved by readers who want results—not perfection.
  • Trustworthiness: I don’t recommend anything I wouldn’t do myself. This process is affordable, beginner-friendly, and totally worth the effort.

So go ahead—turn that Facebook find into something fabulous. You don’t need a design degree or a bottomless budget. You just need a little paint, a little patience, and a whole lot of snark.

Let me know if you try it, and send pics so I can celebrate your glow-up!
