Top 10 Fall Break Destinations in Tennessee

Fall in Tennessee is nothing short of magical. The air turns crisp, the leaves paint the hillsides with fiery reds and golden yellows, and there’s something cozy about pulling on a sweater and sipping cider while soaking up the season. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly getaway, a romantic weekend, or just some good ol’ Southern charm, Tennessee delivers big-time in the fall.

Here are my top 10 picks for fall break destinations in the Volunteer State.

1. Gatlinburg & The Great Smoky Mountains

You can’t talk about fall in Tennessee without mentioning Gatlinburg. Nestled at the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this town is the fall hotspot. The mountain vistas turn into a kaleidoscope of color, and there are endless trails to hike, scenic drives like Newfound Gap, and cozy cabins to snuggle into after a day of exploring. Don’t miss Ober Mountain’s Aerial Tramway for jaw-dropping fall views.

2. Pigeon Forge

Just down the road from Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge is perfect for families. Dollywood’s Harvest Festival is an absolute must — with pumpkin displays, live music, and Southern comfort food that’ll warm your soul. It’s also a budget-friendly stop with everything from go-karts to dinner shows.

3. Chattanooga

If you’re looking for city vibes with a side of nature, Chattanooga is it. Take a stroll along the Riverwalk, explore Rock City’s fall gardens, or ride the Incline Railway for panoramic mountain views. The Tennessee Aquarium is a hit with kids, making this a great fall break option for families.

4. Nashville

Fall in Nashville means cooler temps for exploring downtown and live music spilling out of every corner. Take a walk through Centennial Park, explore Cheekwood’s Harvest displays, and enjoy pumpkin patches and hayrides just outside the city. Bonus: no trip is complete without Nashville’s hot chicken.

5. Knoxville

Home of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is buzzing with football energy in the fall. Tailgates are practically a fall festival themselves. Beyond football, Market Square offers a charming mix of shops, restaurants, and festivals that make it worth a fall break stop.

6. Franklin

Just south of Nashville, Franklin is straight out of a Hallmark movie in the fall. The historic downtown comes alive with festivals like Pumpkinfest, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with pumpkin patches, wineries, and farms that offer hayrides and apple cider. You don’t want to miss the Franklin Theater. They have lots of fun things to do during the year.

Here I’m interviewing Rose Reid from the Finding Joy movie premiere at the Franklin Theater.

7. Memphis

Memphis in the fall is cooler and perfect for strolling down Beale Street, visiting Graceland, or taking in the riverfront views. Shelby Farms Park is especially beautiful this time of year, with trails that glow in autumn colors. Plus, you can’t beat Memphis BBQ for a cozy fall meal. Who doesn’t love BBQ?

8. Cookeville & The Upper Cumberland

This hidden gem in middle Tennessee is known for its waterfalls — and they’re stunning in the fall. Burgess Falls, Cummins Falls, and Fall Creek Falls State Park (about 45 minutes away) are all perfect day trips when the leaves are changing.

9. Johnson City & Northeast Tennessee

For a quieter mountain escape, head to Johnson City. It’s close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and offers plenty of hiking and biking trails with breathtaking fall foliage. Grab a coffee downtown and enjoy the laid-back vibe.

10. Reelfoot Lake

For something unique, Reelfoot Lake in northwest Tennessee is a cypress swamp created by an earthquake in the 1800s. In fall, it’s peaceful, beautiful, and a paradise for birdwatchers as migrating eagles and waterfowl pass through. It’s unlike anywhere else in the state.

Final Thoughts

Tennessee shines in every season, but fall is when it truly shows off. From mountain escapes to small-town charm and vibrant cities, there’s no shortage of ways to make your fall break unforgettable. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, cheering at a football game, or cozying up in a cabin with a mug of cider, Tennessee’s got you covered.

So pack that flannel, grab your pumpkin spice latte, and go make some memories this fall! 🍁
