With my low buy year in full swing I thought I’d take some time to write about how it’s going. My low buy update is that so far it’s going so good. I have been to the thrift store twice and only bought two things. A book (I know but it was $1) and a bread pan to cook my sourdough in. I also bought cheesecloth nut bags so I can make my own yogurt or nut milk (that will definitely save me money in the long run). The other thing I have bought is tickets to see a ballet for my daughter and I. It was beautiful and such a great time for us to spend together. I would rather buy experiences rather than things. That’s where I am in my life.

In the last two months we cut the cord and got rid of all pay tv. So, because of that we did buy a tablo dvr. That did cost money but it will save us so much money in the long run. We have been using it now for about two months and are so happy to cut the cord and not be spending $120/month on Youtube TV and Netflix. The dvr makes me so happy as I skip over the annoying commercials! The fact that we aren’t paying for tv and still see probably at least 300 channels makes me very happy as well. So we paid probably $140 for the dvr but in the two months we’ve been using it we’ve saved $240!
I’ve not bought any clothes, make up, or other items. I’ve not made impulse purchases on things I thought I had to have. I love that I’ve stayed consistent in not buying on Amazon. It’s a good thing. I’m trying to find other places to buy from that aren’t lining the pockets of billionaires.
Now for the ten things I no longer buy!
- K-cups Just using my reusable k-cup and it’s working great. It’s working out to about $ 0.10/a cup of coffee.
- Paper Towels Just using my pre-made paper towels. Once made you’ll have forever.
- Bottled Water I haven’t bought bottled water in years. Just use my fridge water.
- New Books
- Premade Mixes (brownies, cake, etc)
- Anything from Temu, Shein, or Amazon
- Expensive Foundations/Make up Drug Store cosmetics will do just fine!
- Plants I’m foraging my land for new ones if I want a new plant. I know I have ferns on the hill and I want to plant some for my porch.
- No new board games We are a board game or card game family. But we have so many and we haven’t learned to play them yet. We are going to learn the games that we haven’t played yet.
- Sourdough I’m making my own now and that is saving me around $7 a week! We are loving our homemade sourdough bread.
