When you get laid off, even when it’s expected it’s still hard. I was laid off last month. I knew it was coming. The last time I was laid off I knew it was coming then too. You just know sometimes. But you can get over it, get to the other side, and find out that what you end up doing is way better then what you had before! It happens. There’s no shame in businesses downsizing and your job being cut. I know it’s easy to say, but I’ve been through it twice. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you either. The bottom line is it feels terrible to be laid off. Here’s what’s next when you get laid off.
Look for the silver lining if you can. Try to find something new to do. Maybe it’s something you love more. Then see if you can make a job of it or pivot into a new role. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to find a new and different role to do. Here’s my video I made talking about it all. It’s nothing but me talking about being laid off. Youtube is dumb. LOL
What do you do next after being laid off?
If you need to find a job immediately then start subbing at schools. They always need people. Work nights at Walmart, clean houses or churches. Just get some money coming in so you can work on what the next thing you want to do is! Opening a day care in your home and keeping just four kids may be enough to replace your income now. It seems to pay way better than when I did it. Be hopeful, fill out resumes, but, find something to do until that next job comes your way! If you’re not the sort of person that can be your own boss you can always search indeed, walk into your favorite places to shop and see if they’re hiring (sometimes in person is the best marketing you can do for yourself). But get out there!
If it’s been a few years since you’ve had a job make sure you update your resume. You can even hire people who will make your resume shine like it’s never shined before. Pay someone to work up your resume. They can do amazing things to make you look like the superhero you are. Things that we don’t even think about they do and can put it into the right words on your resume.
Even though lay offs are hard. They can be extremely helpful to help you get to the next part of your life!
Do you have any ideas that others can do if they’ve been laid off recently? We all need to help those going through their hard time. Lift their spirits, buy them a coffee, be a good friend and help them understand you are not your job. You are a wonderful human who just happens to do xyz. You have got this. Go out and find your passion now. Good luck. I’m rooting for you!
