Should we go back to owning and keeping our own copies of physical media instead of relying on streaming?
The debate over keeping physical copies of digital media versus relying solely on streaming services is multifaceted. It encompasses various considerations such as convenience, ownership, access, and longevity. But here’s the thing…I’m worried with the way the actors and actresses get paid (and they rightly deserve being paid for the streaming work, dvds, etc) is going to affect our ability to access what we want to watch and when. I’m also very sad thinking about all the stuff we gave away instead of keeping (cd’s, dvd’s etc.). Does anyone else think about this or is it just me?
Here’s the six things you should think about on owning or streaming media!
- Ownership: When you buy physical copies of media, you own them outright. With streaming services, you’re essentially leasing access to content that can be revoked at any time due to licensing agreements or changes in the service’s catalog. Having physical copies gives you more control over your media library.
- Access: While streaming services offer vast libraries of content, they require a stable internet connection. Physical copies ensure access regardless of internet availability or service outages. This can be crucial, especially in areas with unreliable internet connections or during emergencies.
- Quality: Physical media often provides higher quality audio and video compared to streaming, which can be compressed to save bandwidth. If you’re an audiophile or cinephile, this might be a significant factor in favor of physical copies.
- Longevity: Digital streaming services can come and go, leaving you with no access to your favorite content. Companies can shut down or alter their offerings, leaving users with no recourse. Physical media, on the other hand, can last for decades if properly cared for, ensuring your access to content in the long term.
- Collectibility and Sentimentality: Some people enjoy collecting physical media as a hobby. There’s a tangible pleasure in browsing shelves of DVDs, Blu-rays, or vinyl records. Additionally, physical copies can hold sentimental value, especially if they’re associated with important memories or experiences.
- Environmental Impact: Streaming is often touted as more environmentally friendly since it doesn’t require the manufacturing and transportation of physical products. However, the energy consumption of streaming services and the disposal of electronic devices can also have significant environmental consequences.
Ultimately, the decision between physical copies and streaming depends on individual preferences and priorities.
Some may prefer the convenience and variety of streaming, while others value the ownership, quality, and longevity of physical media. Additionally, a hybrid approach, combining both physical and digital formats, can offer the best of both worlds for many consumers. I’m not saying I want to own everything I’ve ever watched. What I’m saying is that I’m being more mindful and looking for digital media and cd’s at yard sales and thrift stores more because I know one day they may just decide to shelve the series parenthood rather than pay the actors. This is what makes me sad!
What do you think will happen with media in the next few years? I don’t want to think this way but this is how my mind works. It does make me worried that they will start shelving shows instead of letting us watch them.
