Wonder why I said Karl Urban is the nicest guy in Hollywood?
First off, this is the nicest guy. He came into the room shocked we were excited to see him and shook everyone’s hand and said hello to each of us. Then he went back to the table and sat down for our interview. He was thoughtful and well spoken and quite a gentleman. Check out my interview with Karl Urban, Skurge of Thor Ragnarok.
Interviewing Karl Urban as Skurge on Thor Ragnarok
I heard a lot of the movie was improvised. Can you go into that?
Taika has a strong comedic sensability. There was a lot of lines that he would just make up. You felt comfortable in whatever choice you made as you said your lines. It gave us wonderful freedom to explore our lines. The outtakes are going to be entertaining I can’t wait to see them.
Do you have a favorite scene that didn’t make it in?
Skurge’s introduction. They had a whole collection of stolen stuff. We only got to see one thing he had taken. We shot hours of me with a fishing rod and I can’t wait to see them in the outtakes.
What did you think of watching the movie?
I feel so blessed to have watched it with my colleagues but also with an audience that was so thoroughly entertained. I give credit to Taika and Marvel as this film reboots it in such a positive way. This film showcases Taika’s potential. I’ve wanted to work with Taika for a long time. I’m a huge fan. I like the dilemma that Skurge has in this story. He’s looking for a way to not be the bad guy and redeem himself.
I heard you didn’t read a lot of the comics before that so that you wouldn’t be influenced. Is that true?
I didn’t. I didn’t do my homework. It’s a mistake to play a stereotypical caricature of the villian. They have faults and flaws. It’s pretty clear that Skurge is just trying to survive. You can see his regret and repulsion but he had no choice. It is just so relatable.

What did you think of the strong female cast in this film?
It would have been a boring film without them. Cate and Tessa were such a vital part of this movie. I love the journey of Tessa’s character for reclaiming herself and her journey. She had such swagger. I had such a wonderful time working with Cate Blanchett. I read the script and saw that 90% of my scenes were with her. I said, “where do I sign up and how much do I pay you?”
What’s it like being part of Marvel and what’s next for you?
Being part of Marvel was an absolute pleasure. I have a huge respect for what they’ve done. I love how they supported Taika and gave him the freedom and courage to do his job. No one does it better than Marvel. There’s been talk about a Dredd tv show. It won’t be a sequel to the movie but a reimagining of it. I told them I’d be interested in that if it has a compelling story. So, we shall see what they do. The movie I’m most excited about is the one I just finished with Sofia Vergarra. She plays a great villian.
How is your process different from TV to a major motion picture like Thor?
The last tv I did was a few years ago I found that to be quite grueling. 17 hour days 6 days a week I loved the cast and crew but it wasn’t the most pleasurable experience. I don’t believe all tv is like that. Working on Thor was a sheer pleasure. We worked hard. We worked 10 hour days and didn’t stop for lunch. There was a constant momentum. Taika providing the soundtrack helped.
Your character is so conflicted. How did you teach your boys to get through something like this?
Parenting you have to lead by example. It’s wonderful to watch them grow when you don’t push them too hard. I’m most proud of them when on their own volution they grow on their own. They go and get a job or start eating right etc. They tried to give me the credit but we know that it comes from within.
Such a great interview. Thank you Karl. You’re the better Urban.
