I partnered with Gramercy Films on this trip to Beverly HIlls to get these exclusive interviews for you!
Here’s some fun pictures of our trip! Check them out and then enjoy my interview with Kevin Munroe.
While walking all over Beverly Hills we saw so many stores. Stores I’d never heard of or shopped at. But it was fun to be there early on a Saturday morning. We so enjoyed our quiet walk that early in the morning.
This is me and my friends on the Ratchet and Clank Press Trip. Here we are on the bus heading to the interviews. It was amazing! Now let me introduce you to Kevin Munroe.
Interview with Kevin Munroe director of Ratchet and Clank
Kevin was so funny and down to Earth. He was kind and geniuine and gave a great interview. Check out his feelings on Ratchet and Clank.
How did you get involved with the project?
Kevin Munroe: I feel it’s all about finding a good story. I had animation training and got in through video games. From there I went on to other fun character driven projects. This is a very familiar world for me. It doesn’t matter if it’s a game, movie or tv show it’s all about a story.
The music was so great in the movie. What was the process in choosing it?
Kevin Munroe: The music in Ratchet and Clank was composed by Evan Wise. It was his first film he had really composed. He had something to say. It was a crazy journey in terms of comedy and acting. But he did mix a lot of tones and action and the music brought it all together. He really worked in a looney toones kind of vibe and the msuic let us know it was funny. It was fun doing this and giving nods to the humor through our music. The music ties the story together.
What were you inspired by?
Kevin Munroe: Ratchet and Clank was first written by TJ Fixman and he had a fantastic first draft. It was filled with so many characters and so much story. So my job was to come in and find what story we were telling out of it. My biggest challenge was the game had been around since 2002. So there’s 10000 stories and adventures they had gone on. So what was the story we wanted to tell which is how Ratchet and Clank met. Then if everything goes well we get to tell more stories in more movies at a later date. That first draft was inspirational.
Did you envision the actors that would carry out these roles?
Kevin Munroe: No, I don’t fall prey to we need to get a big name actor. I don’t really do that. It’s always about the character. It’s definitely not about finding a big name actor. So I had already worked with JAT doing ninja turtles. So we created a character and do they (the actors trying out) service the character well. We don’t want Sly Stallone servicing a mousy character. We lucked out and got both big names and great characters in our movie.
The fans in this game are very passionate, what was the biggest problem getting it to the big screen?
Kevin Munroe: The ratchet fans have been so supportive and I’ve gotten crazy good energy from them. The biggest challenge is that games are such a user driven unique perspective and I’ve been worried about not screwing it up for them. From the feedback I’ve gotten so far I think they’re pleased.
What did you enjoy most about your time at LucasFilms?
Kevin Munroe: Getting to work with George Lucas! It felt like it was film school all over again. Everyone has their opinons of what they think of him. But he takes a movie and moves things around and makes it incredible. I loved working with him.
I’m most passionate about storytelling. I love the combination of visual, words, music and color. My fist job was on Hey Arnold. I was able to inform story and who they are by their costume choices. I love the balance of it all. I love to make films.
Boom and mic drop! Thanks Kevin for the amazing interview. Look for my interview with Bella Thorne and James Arnold Taylor next week!
Two unlikely heroes struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.
