When the Cypress Whispers is this beautifully written story of family love that draws you in from the first chapter. Yvette Manessis Corporon has done a wonderful job explaining to me something that is completely foreign. The words, stories and myths are all told from a Greek perspective and background, which is something I knew nothing about. I felt as if I was learning history as well as listening to a good storyteller. The story starts out with the main character leaving the US to go back and visit Greece. The story draws you in and makes you want to know more about this beautiful family and the strength needed to get through the tragedies many face in life. It was a sweet read and would be a great book to take to the beach or on vacation and give yourself a sweet little break from your reality.

Here’s a little bit about the author Yvette Manessis Corporon.
Like you, I’m a mom who is dedicated to my children (Christiana, 12 and Nico, 10) but who also strives to find a balance between supporting my family while not losing sight of my own personal goals and dreams. And like you, I also know this is not always easy – or sometimes possible.
As a Senior Producer with the television show, EXTRA, my job is to help others achieve their dreams, whether it is interviewing a newly crowned American Idol or a celebrity about their dream role. One day, about 7 years ago, I realized that I wanted to do more than ask people what it feels like to see their dream become a reality, I wanted to know what that feels like myself…. so I sat down and started writing. You know how difficult it can be to find a quiet moment to write, so I wrote this book the only time I could, at 3, 4, or 5am, at my kitchen table, with a large pot of coffee, while my family slept upstairs.
When the Cypress Whispers is the story of a young woman named Daphne and the deep and magical bond she shares with her Greek grandmother, her Yia-yia. It’s based on my family and takes place on the magical Greek island that we still call home. I grew up listening to my own Yia-yia’s stories of life on the island and how as a young mother she befriended a Jewish Girl named Rosa whose family was hiding from the Nazis. Despite the risk to themselves and their families, not one person on our island gave up the secret of Rosa’s family – and they were saved. Even though the Nazis had said that anyone found hiding Jews would be killed, along with their entire families, night after night my grandmother would throw open the doors to our home to welcome Rosa inside. It is their stories which resonate in my heart and on the pages of this book.
In my book, Yia-yia tells Daphne about the Cypress Whispers, inspiring her to listen to her own voice and the voices of their ancestors whispering to them on the breeze. Everyone has that one special person in their life, that one person whose words resonate and stay with you every single day of your life, that one person you know will watch over you always. Maybe it was your mother, your grandmother, a favorite aunt, a teacher, even a childhood friend. I would love for you to be part of this journey with me. I would love to hear your story. Please tell me – who was the one person from your past whose words still guide you today? Whose Voice Do You Hear When The Cypress Whispers?
My hope is not that you’ll just read my story – but become part of the story by sharing your personal Cypress Whisper.
Thank you again,
Yvette
