Why have kids?

Jessica Valenti, a feminist, poses this question and delves into research that should support whether you should or should not have kids. She wrote this book to get people talking. Positively or negatively it doesn’t matter she just wants us talking and challenging what we believe. We have this perfect mom front that we put up. The truth is, we are far from it! Why don’t we show both sides and take the guilt and the fear out of parenting.

If statistics are showing that us as parents are unhappy then should we continue to encourage others to have kids? Why not show them both sides and let them decide. That’s what Jessica’s book “Why Have Kids?” strives to do. Maybe we should make communities that build up parents and raise children together rather than looking down on others for their choices. Communities of love and help instead of judgement while we look down our noses at a choice we wouldn’t have made. But that is just us. Not them. It’s their choice to make. Let’s let them make it and then see what happens.

Why Have Kids? chooses to address all the tough questions and offers solutions to problems the new parents may not have thought of. It’s definitely on my must read list. I wish this would have been out when I began having children. It wouldn’t have changed anything though. 🙂

She lives with her family in Boston, but remains a New Yorker at heart.
