How to Make Faux Stained Glass Windows
Stained glass is beautiful, there’s no doubt about it. However, finding an original piece of stained glass to fit an existing space can be quite expensive. And commissioning a piece from an artist can also be quite expensive and time consuming. An easy solution is to create your own design. You may think that it’s impossible to create faux stained glass windows but it’s actually a lot easier than you think! Follow these easy steps and before you know it you will be pleasantly surprised with your talents!
Here’s how to make faux stained glass windows of your own.
Supplies:
* Glass paint
* Liquid leading
* Glass picture frame or glass window to paint
* Printed pattern (Coloring books and stained glass pattern books are a great place to start. You can also create your own pattern)
Step #1 The first step is to find your pattern and to choose paint colors you want in your pattern. Gather the rest of your supplies. If you’re painting a glass frame to hang in a window, you’ll need to section off the area you’re going to paint. You can use masking tape to mark the area to be painted. If you’re using a glass picture frame, remove the backing so both sides of the glass are exposed.
Step #2 Enlarge or reduce your pattern to fit your desired area.
Step #3 Place the pattern on the backside of the glass and secure it. It’s easiest if the glass you’re going to be painting is lying on a horizontal surface. If it’s hanging or upright your paint may drip.
Step #4 Trace the pattern with your liquid leading and let dry. Remember to work from the inside out. Begin with the inner most lines and work outwards so your hand doesn’t accidently smudge the line of leading.
Step #5 Fill in the pattern with your glass paint and let dry.
Step #6 Hang your window. Or if you’re using a glass picture frame, grab some caulk and run a bead of caulk around the backside of the frame so the glass stays in place and hangs in front of your favorite window.
Creating a stained glass window effect doesn’t have to be expensive, nor does it have to be difficult. If you want to try your hand at a smaller project, you can create several stained glass picture frame gifts for friends. Enjoy!
